Met the author at convention in Knoxville TN. She and her husband were wonderful people. Bought the book. Started reading and was engrossed from the beginning. Read straight through. Can't wait for her next book.
This was an enjoyable, hard to put down book. The MC is a very young Hafling, half human half Hillcat. He doesn’t have a name & he’s enslaved to an abusive tavern owner who beats him regularly. The young Hafling is collared & leashed with a rope & fed mostly scraps or what he can salvage himself. He finally escapes due to a fire only to be enslaved again by a brutish Dwarf. After escaping the Dwarf, the youngling finally is shown kindness & care by a Ranger who takes him on as an apprentice & lets him choose a name for himself. The Hafling chooses the name Harrel. The kind Ranger is intent on helping Harrel learn to talk, take care of himself & learn to defend himself as well.
As Ranger Welslin & Harrel journey the Kingdom of Halverrarde gathering information for the King, Harrel comes to care for the Ranger more & more & appreciate the kindness only Ranger Welslin has shown him. Harrel has much to learn as he & the Ranger encounter the unfriendly, unaccepting humans, dangerous Barbarians & Ogres as well as the treacherous terrain they encounter. I’m excited to learn more in Book 2. Kudos to new author, JoAnn Parsley on her first, well written, well edited book!
